Vinegar, or acetic acid, has been used for thousands of years as a cleaning agent, preservative, flavor enhancer, deodorant, weed killer and cat repellent. Vinegar is made from fermenting sugars in water and allowing the alcohol to turn into acetic acid.
Cats
Most cats will avoid anything that smells like vinegar. A simple cat repellent solution can be made by mixing one part water and one part white distilled vinegar.
Uses for cats
Spray vinegar solution on furniture and upholstery to ward off scratchy claws. A couple of splashes of vinegar around the garden will keep cats from ripping up plants and flowers.
