Difference Between Whole Grain Bread & Wheat Bread

Walking down the bread aisle can be overwhelming. The bread smells yummy, but there are so many choices it can get confusing, especially when trying to pick to best tasting, most nutritious options.

Whole Grain

    A grain, according to the Mayo Clinic, is "a seed of grass cultivated for food." It is made up of three parts - the germ, which is the part that would grow a new plant; the endosperm, which is the bulk of the interior of the seed; and the bran, which is the outer layer that holds everything together. When a product is marked "whole grain" it means that all parts of the grain are still intact. Refined grains have had everything but the endosperm removed, eliminating nearly all of the fiber and most of the vitamins and minerals. Well-known grains include wheat, bulgur, oatmeal, popcorn, wild rice and brown rice.

Whole Wheat

    Whole wheat is one type of whole grain. There are different kinds of wheat. The Mayo Clinic says that "regular whole-wheat bread is made with red wheat." This wheat provides the dark color of the bread and has a bitter taste.

White Whole Wheat

    The white whole wheat products that have become popular provide all the same benefits as the regular whole-wheat products but are made with an albino type of wheat. The Mayo Clinic says this wheat has a lighter color and a sweeter flavor as well as a softer texture.
